The Lehigh Valley Health Network now offers bariatric surgery for 16 և 17 year olds. LVHN is the first healthcare network in the region to offer adolescent bariatric surgery.
The project is part of the Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital և Lehigh Valley Institute of Surgical Excellence.
“We are proud to bring this cutting-edge transformative care home,” said Brian Leader, director of the Lehigh Valley Institute of Surgical Excellence. “There is solid scientific evidence to support the use of bariatric surgery to improve adolescent health.”
When is bariatric surgery the right choice?
Obesity is a serious, complex health problem that affects millions of teens. For teens who have failed to lose weight with traditional weight loss remedies or are suffering from obesity-related health problems, bariatric surgery is a safe, effective treatment to develop a healthy, active life.
The teens underwent bariatric surgery at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Cedar Crest and were transferred to the University Children’s Hospital Children’s Hospital for postoperative care.
All bariatric surgeries are performed using robotic surgery, which results in less pain, fewer complications, and faster healing.
Adolescents are usually advised to undergo gastric weight loss surgery, which works by reducing the size of the stomach. Some adolescent patients undergo gastric bypass surgery (also called Roux-en-Y).
This option, which restricts food intake, prevents the body from absorbing calories, and helps control the return of acids. Bariar surgeons work with patients’ families to choose the right option for their specific needs.
Both types of bariatric surgery have been shown to cause significant weight loss. They treat high blood pressure in 70% of patients, and in 80% of people with type 2 diabetes apnea.
“The primary focus of the Adolescent Bariatric Program is to improve the long-term health of adolescents struggling with obesity,” says Dr. Richard Bors, of LVPG General, Bariatric and Trauma Surgery. “But the added benefits of self-esteem and life experience are immeasurable.”
Advantages և Competence:
Health benefits may include:
• Reverses weight-related health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes և hypertension և reduces the risk of Blont disease (tibia vara) և femoral epiphysis.
• Often eliminates sleep apnea և reduces the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
• Improves mobility և Reduces gait pain
• Reduces the risk of developing cardiovascular disease in adults
Adolescent surgery eligibility requirements include:
• Body mass index 40 or more
• BMI 35 or higher when accompanied by obesity-related health condition
Bariatric medicine is more than just surgery
The LVHN Weight Management Center uses a multidisciplinary approach to provide adolescents with the education and support they need to prepare for bariatric surgery.
After enrolling in the program, teens and their families attend preoperative nutrition and counseling courses. Adolescents must make changes to their diet before surgery.
After the procedure, the teens will stay at Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital, usually for two nights. The program then provides postoperative weight management strategies related to diet, exercise and other lifestyle changes.
Anyone interested in learning about adolescent bariatric surgery can schedule a consultation with a nurse navigator by calling 888-402-LVHN (5846).
