Just five years after its opening, the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Flower Mound Weight Loss Center has reached a national audience. The hospital is working with Intuitive Surgical, a maker of DaVinci robots, to serve as a viewing point for surgeons interested in viewing Folahan Ayoola, MD, FACS FASMBS, Program Director և his team, who perform robotic weight loss surgery.

“There are not many places in the country that serve as places of interest,” said Dr. Ayola. “The hospital has four DaVinci robots that allow it to perform advanced robotic surgery. I know of other DFW sites, but they are usually located in major medical centers. Having such a program in a smaller community hospital is quite a big deal.

“I used to visit other surgeons, but now they come to Flower Mound to talk to our doctors և management to find out how the hospital program works.

“Many people think that the robot is performing surgery, but in reality the surgeon is performing the operation. The robot simply allows the surgeon to be more precise laparoscopically to smooth the movements through the computer to make sure that the surgical suture and other tools are used optimally.

When selective procedures were allowed to return after the initial stroke of last year’s COVID-19 epidemic, patients jumped in using the services of the Weight Loss Center. With many people working from home, they could return to work a day or two after their procedures rather than wait for the typical 1-2 weeks to return to their office.

To make it easier for patients to prepare for their procedures, the Weight Loss Center offers home training rather than regular on-site training. This allowed patients to learn on their own, in an environment that required less interaction with people, thus limiting their impact on COVID-19.

“All of this made it much easier to decide on surgery,” said Dr. Ayola. “There is a lot of information to learn; to do it from the comfort of your own home, at your own pace, is a huge benefit.”

Since 2016, the program has grown to nine out of three surgeons who, according to Dr. Aylula, will perform a record 300-400 surgeries this year. In addition to Dr. Ayola, surgeons include Dr. Tariq Al-Callan, Dr. Chukwama Apakama, Dr. Richard Novak, Dr. Ayey Roberts, Dr. Patrick Shovlin, Dr. Adam Smith, Dr. Chad Thoracian, Dr. The team also includes nutritionists, prenatal psychiatrists, radiologists, nurses specializing in bariatric patients, and counselors who provide support group meetings on a regular basis.

“When you visit an institution, you meet people who are experts in the field of bariatrics,” said Dr. Ayola. “Our experienced team, as well as the state-of-the-art technologies in the operating rooms, help us achieve excellent results.

“Part of our strength is that we are all collegial. If one of our doctors sees a patient who requires a procedure that he or she does not recommend, they will refer you to another doctor in the program. This is important because it allows patients to receive the personalized care they need rather than being crammed into a particular therapy. It reflects the efforts of the team at the patient center. ”

Bariatric surgery is a big decision that should not be taken lightly. Citing a study by the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Ayola said that when comparing obese people who underwent bariatric surgery with those who were not, the study found that those who underwent surgery were more likely to live longer.

“The main thing that really matters is the attitude of the people around obese patients so that patients can decide to get help,” he said. “Just stopping someone from eating can be incredibly immoral. Many who have reached the stage of surgery have tried many methods of weight loss, they are simply unsuccessful. This approach does not help patients move forward. ”

Why is it so important that patients keep trying to solve their obesity struggle? Doctors at the Health Flower Mound Weight Loss Center in Texas have seen many patients who have seen their diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol improve, and in some cases, resolve after reaching a healthy weight.

“It was quite exciting for this young hospital to be a successful center for bariatric surgery,” said Dr. Ayola. “It’s important to note that surgery is not the only treatment plan, we have a really good group of suppliers and staff who have experience in a wide range of weight loss opportunities.”
