Bariatric surgery can be a very effective way for people who are obese and have not been able to lose the traditional weight loss tactics to lose a lot of weight. When done with a commitment to healthy lifestyle changes, it can be a life-changing, even life-saving, process.

But it can also cause another problem for those undergoing surgery – excess skin.

“Loose, worn skin can be a functional problem,” says Matthew Ranzer, MD, FACS, OSF HealthCare surgeon who specializes in plastic surgery.. “Your clothes do not fit well, skin contact can cause irritation, pain, discomfort. We can remove excess skin that creates unwanted problems, և return you to your normal contour.

People thinking about bariatric surgery և skin surgery should educate themselves before using treatment options to make sure their weight loss is as safe as possible, understand the requirements for success, and justify reasonable expectations of their results.

“Surgery is not a magic wand,” says Dr. Ranzer. “We can not unnecessarily guess what happened to your body from weight gain և weight loss. We can restore the normal contours of your body, but it requires surgery, which means risk scars. “Most patients feel very well. Complications are rare, but they do happen.”

The most important way to optimize patient safety is to stay healthy before surgery.

Dr. Ranzer does not perform skin surgery until the weight loss path is complete, which usually occurs about a year after surgery. He waits until the weight stabilizes, the person does not have a body mass index (BMI) of 34 or more.

“I will not have skin surgery on someone with a higher BMI due to increased complications, because I do my best work, I get the best aesthetic results, when I mainly remove the skin, not the skin և fat” said Dr. Ranzer.

“There are two reasons why we are expecting a stable weight,” he said. “One, if you are still in the process of losing weight, you can develop more worn skin. Instead of having multiple surgeries in the same area, I prefer to have one operation the right way. The second reason is the way patients lose weight, in fact, due to deliberate malnutrition. Thus, the body must restore the level of nutrition to normal in order to promote proper recovery.

You do not have the right to have skin surgery if you use nicotine on any egg, as this increases the risk of complications.

Some procedures may be covered by insurance, but to obtain insurance you usually have to show an operational malfunction և that your attempts to manage impairment by other methods were unsuccessful. Many insurance providers require that the person be at their height for at least six months after surgery.

And insurance can not yet cover some parts of the body part of the procedure. It can not cover the movement of the abdominal button or the contraction of the abdominal muscles, և can only cover the removal of loose skin.

General procedures for skin surgery

More rarely than common

  1. Abdominal contour – excessive skin removal և tightening of trunk muscles. Sometimes this is only for the abdomen, but sometimes it also involves the buttocks.
  2. Breast reduction or breast augmentation – This procedure may include an increase to restore volume if the breasts appear to be deviated from weight loss.
  3. Raising the arms բարձր Raising the thighs

Facial and neck lifts are the least common procedures because insurance providers consider them for aesthetic purposes only, so they are never covered as often as others because of the high cost of these cosmetic procedures.

What to expect?

After receiving financial or insurance approval, the surgeries are performed under general anesthesia, usually on an outpatient basis, and the patient goes home the same day.

“Usually we do not perform a whole body on one operation,” said Dr. Ranzer. “We will give priority to the area that worries them the most, and we will return later to perform the next stage of surgery. “If someone has loose skin on some parts of the body, over time they may need two or four surgeries to remove excess skin.”

What else can a skin surgery patient expect from the procedure? Here are some of Dr. Renzer’s ideas for recovery.

  • Usually, in many procedures, the surgeon injects a short, long-acting anesthetic to make the patient comfortable after the operation.
  • Depending on the nature of the surgery, drainage tubes may come out of your body and be removed in one to three weeks.
  • Half of the patients will need only acetaminophen or ibuprofen to cope with the pain after surgery, and the other half will need some prescription strength for about a week.
  • All patients should be able to stand and walk on the day of surgery.
  • Many of them are able to carry out normal activities – dress, cook, clean, leave the house on the same day of surgery.
  • Many people are allowed to take a shower the day after surgery.
  • Many people find that they feel comfortable sitting at a desk within a week or two if they have a desk-type job.
  • All patients are required to lose more than 10 kg for about six weeks after surgery.
  • Restrictions on light work can usually resume about two weeks after surgery.
  • Most procedures require a six-week postoperative compression garment.

There is a risk of stroke, blood clots, bleeding and infection with any surgery. Finishing weight loss reduces those risks, so you need the permission of your primary care provider to help minimize the risks.

The most common side effects are asymmetry in the body of the horse, if the weight loss is not uniform, and scars associated with surgery. Dr. Ranzer says there is no way to remove the skin, says Dr. Ranzer, so you exchange skin for worn-out scars, but an improved body contour can be more beneficial than negative scars. The danger with scars is that they can reopen, requiring a second operation to improve their appearance and strength.

“You have to stick to lifestyle changes,” said Dr. Ranzer. “There is no shortcut. You need to do it the right way or risk complications. I take care of many patients who have undergone skin removal surgery without losing weight, have left the country to find someone, and have returned with life-threatening complications. Your health is not something to risk. You have to do it the right way. ”
